National Novel Writing Month

the first draft is as bad a sthe book is ever going to be

If you’re not familiar with National Novel Writing Month (or Nano, Nanowrimo- take your pick), it is an event that runs every November. The goal is to write 50,000 in 30 days, or 1337 words per day. It’s a HUGE undertaking and I cannot count myself among the winners (yet). My best was 30,000 2 years ago (still a big deal in my neck of the woods). So, if you need me during November, that’s where I’ll be. Anyway, back to my point- Nano has an enormous following of both published and unpublished writers, new writers, experienced writers, script writers. They hold camps during the year to prepare for this month. During November, there is also at least one “double your word count day”.

There is a great writer’s community right here in the city! Every Sunday in November they meet to write together, encourage each other and keep the momentum going! (Check out the Saint John Region on Nano’s page or Fog City Scribes on Facebook)

Preptober

So, with that said, Preptober is fully underway! I started writing more to get my stamina up. I won’t call it a rousing success, but it sure got the juices flowing! I have pens and paper, highlighters and post its a plenty! (I’m not as efficient when I write on a computer- I’m far more likely to edit as I go and that’s not the point) I have a list of writing prompts (largely from Pinterest) and a host of scenes that need to happen. I feel pretty organized at this point, but I still have prep work left to do.

I am going to use the Reverse Nano approach. It means a LOT of heavy work at the beginning, when I’m fresh out of the gate and less work at the end when I’m getting burned out. This is my first time with this approach, so I’ll let you know how it worked for me! I have my daily word count written in my planner and I hope that serves as some motivation. November 4th is Double Your Word Count Day, so wish me luck!
